It’s a warm Saturday night in the middle of September with only the faint sound of a steam engine hauling some freight cars filling up the late summer air. Everything is going great – you’re spared from that unbearable summer humidity for tonight, and that Pre-War engine that was the summer project piece has finally stopped shorting on the track. As the night and your transformer begin to wind down, there’s a sudden gust of wind! And before you know it – a peculiar little owl arrives and drops a letter into your gondola.
You finally open the letter, and your eyes are filled with joy…or maybe magic is a better word. That’s right – thanks to your creativity and commitment to conjuring up magic on your own layout, the head wizards at Hogwarts have decided to invite you along to help them recreate the same magic on their layouts. What to bring? Your favorite locomotive? Your most trusty boxcar? Dumbledore says not to worry, and assures you that the school of witchcraft and wizardry will have everything you need to create the most magical model train experience. Oh wait, do bring 12 sections of some Lionel Fastrack – shipping to Hogwarts is not easy so we’ll just stuff that into our carry-on.
Harry Potter Comes to Trainz!
Well we’ve finally arrived at Hogwarts, but before we meet Harry Potter and the rest of his gang, why don’t we brush up on the trains at Hogwarts. With the Harry Potter franchise reaching the incredible heights it has in global pop culture it only makes sense that you’re likely to start seeing Harry Potter and the Hogwarts insignia pop up everywhere and on everything. Lunch boxes, t-shirts, bumper stickers, coffee mugs are all just a few different items that have featured Harry Potter and his band of wizard friends.
So it was only fitting that we bring Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, Hermione Granger, and the rest of Hogwarts into our world of model trains. And, who else but Lionel than to live up to the task of making quite possibly the most magical line-up of Harry Potter products ranging from completely ready to run trains sets to Gryffindor boxcars so you can proudly represent your house at the Quidditch Cup.
Seeing as I have over a decade of cataloged material to play with, I figured we’d have our own potions class today. Believe me, creating chemistry with the Hogwarts series steam engines and rolling stock from Lionel is going to be easier than feeding Fluffy!
From Hogwarts to Lionel
With Harry Potter being such a dominant force in both literature and film, it only made sense that one of the big boys in the model train industry would try producing their own line of Hogwarts and Harry Potter themed trains. In 2007, Lionel took the first crack at spellcasting, and came up with the battery powered G-Scale Hogwarts Express Set you see listed below. The battery powered Hogwarts Express would prove itself a successful precursor for things to come, making way for a number of future Harry Potter and Hogwarts themed sets and freight cars.
Jumping to 2016, we’d see Lionel add a slew of Harry Potter O-Modern boxcars with designs dedicated to the four major houses that make up Hogwarts, and even the dreaded dementors! But before we decide which house we belong to, we should take a look at some of the improvements to the ready-to-run sets Lionel bega rolling out in the mid 2010s.
The first and most iconic product from Lionel’s Harry Potter series has to be the upgraded Hogwarts LionChief Express Set (model # 6-83620) last cataloged in 2016 . The set features a beautifully designed die-cast 4-6-0 steam locomotive sporting a fresh crimson paint job, and three equally intricately designed passenger cars in tow. This is another ready-to-run set, but this time around Lionel ditched the batteries for a powerful motor, and packed it with RailSounds so you get a fully immersive experience as you roll into your first day of wizardry…or witchcraft! An even more upgraded version Hogwarts Express (model # 6-85418) packed with Bluetooth capabilities would make its appearance in catalogs a year later.
Which House Do You Belong To?
Upon admission to Hogwarts you may be asked to pick a House if you already haven’t been assigned to one. The House represents where you’ll be staying, who you’ll be playing Quidditch alongside with, and your path to mastering wizardry! Lionel was well aware that these House allegiances would arise, and have released some truly magical Harry Potter themed freight and passenger cars. If you’re still having a hard time between Gryffindor or Ravenclaw, then fear not – we’ll take a look at what each house has to offer.
Gryffindor – Courage & Compassion
So you’re assigned to the O-Gauge layout in the Gryffindor house, well congrats because you’ve got the grand jewel as far boxcars go. The Gryffindor boxcar (model # 6-83938) is the rarest of the Harry potter rolling stock we’ll see today. The Gryffindor boxcar hasn’t seen a re-release since its initial introduction with the most recent boxcar only being found within Lionel’s archives. The boxcar is beautifully designed with a crimson base that’s accented to perfection with a vibrant yellow finish on the roof and car ends.
In addition to the boxcar, Lionel just released the Gryffindor Coach Car (model # 2327260) just this year along with three other passenger cars representing each house. Both cars are stamped with the Gryffindor coat of arms, and the passenger cars feature interior illumination that just add to the magic.
HufflePuff – Virtue & Dedication
Ok, so you’re in the HufflePuff house, and you’re ready to conjure up your own O-Modern spell on this O-Gauge layout. Well you’re lucky because you get the most color variety on your layout. The HufflePuff boxcar (model # 6-83940) features a black base breaking from the traditional yellow that members of the HufflePuff House are typically seen in. The yellow and silver printing on the coat of arms is enough to give the boxcar a ton of pop on its heavily muted base.
The HufflePuff Coach car (model # 2327240) stayed true to its house roots, and kept a yellow base as the primary design. The subtle blue stripes are a wonderful way to counterbalance the vibrancy of the yellow base, giving what would be another ordinary coach car a ton of individuality.
Slytherin - Ambition & Honor
Oh, it looks like you’ve been placed in the Slytherin house – oh baby, you’re in for something special. Just like the previous selection the House of Slytherin gets its own boxcar (model #6-83941) , and this one is tied with the Ravenclaw boxcar (more on that later) as my favorite amongst the bunch. Sporting a slightly lighter shade of green from its coach car counterpart – the Slytherin boxcar combines a lighter green base with silver and gold accents on what I think is the most beautiful coat of arms amongst the four Houses. Looking even closer into the shell, you’ll notice various sections that have some lettering slightly faded into the paint.
The Slytherin Coach car (Model # 2327230) is equally as detailed, and pairs the darker green base on the shell with some black and white stripes. It’s a very simple design that oozes in elegance. Throw in some interior illumination and you’re ready to finally overthrow Gryffindor as THE house on campus!
Ravenclaw - Wisdom & Intuition
If you find yourself digging further down into Lionel’s Harry Potter archives, then there’s no way you missed the Ravenclaw boxcar (model # 6-83939). After having time to think it through, I’m going to say this is my favorite out of all of the Hogwarts boxcars, sorry Slytherin. The blue finish is a thing of beauty, and as far as the coat of arms is concerned, the Ravenclaw pairs the design with its base paint head and shoulders above the rest of the houses. Combining the solid blue tone with silver on the roof and car ends is just the cherry on top, and gives any O-Gauge layout a magical upgrade.
Featured in the 2023 Lionel Big Book is the Ravenclaw Coach car (model # 2327250) and is a serious contender for not just the best looking passenger car in the Harry Potter series, but possibly one of the best O-Gauge passenger cars out there. A solid blue base that comes to life when the car’s illumination is cut on is a must have if you belong to the Ravenclaw house.
Dementors Abound!
Our heroes got their own cars, but that doesn't mean that the villains don’t get any love either. So let’s say you show up to Hogwarts, and decide to go rogue! That’s right, you’re taking your O-Gauge layout, and you’re heading over to pledge your service to none other than “he who shall not be named,” the dark wizard himself, Lord Voldemort. And for your dedication to building the dark magic O-Gauge layout, Voldemort has entrusted you with command of his Dementors.
So how do you manage a bunch of restless specters? Simple – you stuff them into a coach car, and wait for your chance to take over Hogwarts! Lionel has released two versions of the Dementor Coach car over the years. The first was a Dementor Coach (model # 6-35229) that featured the dark apparitions on the window inserts, and only featured interior illumination. The second Dementor Coach (model # 6-84767) was released in 2018 and was identical to the original Dementor coach, but featured sounds so you can hear those ghostly whispers as they round your O-Gauge layout. Both cars feature simple designs that are amplified thanks to their operating features.
